CONTEXT: A handful of men roaming in the cosmos discover Alterra, a world astoundingly welcoming. They settle in the most favourable part of a unique continent. So as not to put the biologic balance of Alterra in peril it is forbidden colonize the other territories. However as the population grows clandestine emigrants, who ignore this ruling, increase numerously. The borders are finally closed by the military. - SYNOPSIS Vena, a young noble woman, must leave the heedless world of youth in order to fight at the border. Inexperienced and in the hostile solitude of the mountain agitated by dangerous volcanic phenomena, she confronts the Lone One, an infallible and determined enemy.

CONTEXT: Une poignée d'hommes errants dans le cosmos découvrent Alterra, un monde miraculeusement accueillant. Ils s'installent dans la partie la plus favorable du continent unique. Afin de ne pas mettre en péril l'équilibre biologique d'Alterra les autres territoires sont interdits à la colonisation. Mais la population se développe, et les émigrants clandestins qui passent outre cette interdiction sont de plus en plus nombreux. Les frontières sont finalement fermées militairement. - SYNOPSIS Vena, une toute jeune aristocrate, doit quitter le monde insouciant de la jeunesse pour aller se battre sur la frontière. Inexpérimentée, dans la solitude hostile d'une montagne agitée par de dangereux phénomènes volcaniques, elle affronte le Solitaire, un ennemi infaillible et déterminé.

Chapter 1 The multicoloured ball bounced in the grass, then rolled just to Vena’s feet. She was a gracious young woman, with a lithe, agile body and the rosy smile of the youth. She had just emerged from childhood. Her hair, a glossy luxuriant brown, reaches to her shoulders. It framed a multi-race face of regular features around whose perpetually moving mouth a smile played. She was ‘Daughter of the Miracle’, descended directly from one of the first colonists to arrive on Alterra. She was married to a quiet young man from the house of Feir that she had known forever, and whom she thought she loved. For the moment, she was watching over a group of young children in the park. On the night-blue cloth of her dress, lively dragonflies, flashing scarabs, swirling butterflies pirouetting like the dreams of teenagers, all embroidered with fine metallic threads. The sun speckled the garden through the antlers of the cedars in brassy bursts, and into this ephemeral Eden of laughing children, like thunder, the Duty landed.

Chapitre 1 Le ballon multicolore rebondit dans l'herbe, puis roula jusqu'au pied de Vena. C'était une jeune femme gracieuse, au corps vif et au sourire rosé de la jeunesse. Elle sortait juste de l'enfance.    Sa chevelure d'un beau brun luisant, lui arrivait juste aux épaules.  Elle encadrait un visage métissé, aux traits réguliers, à la bouche légère habitée d'un sourire perpétuellement mouvant. Elle était Fille du Miracle, descendante directe d'un des premiers colons arrivés sur Alterra. On venait de la marier avec un jeune homme taciturne de la maison des Feir, qu'elle connaissait depuis toujours, qu'elle pensait aimer. Pour l'heure, elle gardait un groupe de jeunes enfants dans le parc. Sur le tissu bleu nuit de sa robe vire voltaient comme des rêves de jeune adolescente, des libellules agiles, des scarabées clinquants, des papillons tourbillonnants, tous brodés de fins fils métalliques. Le soleil tachetait d'éclats cuivrés le jardin à travers la ramure des cèdres, et dans cet Eden éphémère de rire d'enfants, débarqua comme un tonnerre le Devoir.
