The Terran Origins

In the closing years of the 23rd century, Earth could no longer sufficiently control population growth.  Widespread discontent with the overcrowded situation provided large numbers of volunteers to man a fleet of small space-faring vessels, constructed using the latest technology.
Undaunted, they set out to cross the space-time Gates, hoping to discover new worlds to colonise.

Le voyage

La  durée de vie des vaisseux et des équipages en hibernation étant limitée,

L'intelligence artificielle qui guide les vaisseaux explore chaque nouveau plan brièvement puis emprunte de nouveau une porte afin de maximiser les chances.

Dans le cas du Vaisseau qui atteint miraculeusement Alterra, le chemin de la porte et le retour vers la terre sont perdus.

The Voyage

Since both the durability of the vessels and the lifespan of their passengers (who spent the voyage hibernating in cryogenic cells) were limited,

 the on-board A.I. guided the vessels by briefly evaluating the situation after each transition, opening new gates to increase the expedition´s chances. Unfortunately, many ships got lost and were never heard of again;

in the case of the vessel which miraculously stumbled upon Alterra, the astronomical data detailing the gate and path to Terra was lost.

Le vaisseau dont nous suivons l'épopée, lecteur, par la Grâce, a détecté un monde habitable.

Ce monde est alors scanné depuis orbite,
puis le module contenant l'équipage atterrit, et les hiommes sont revitalisés.

Une partie du vaisseau reste dans l'espace,, servant notamment de balise et de satellite d'observation, sans avoir les capacités de quitter l'orbite d'Alterra. Il se dégrade p		 -
The Miracle

This vessel, by chance or by Grace, found a habitable world.

Scanning the planet from orbit, the A.I. approved it as suitable and deployed the landing module, which contained equipment and the hibernating passengers, who were subsequently revitalised.

The structural core of the vessel remains in orbit to this day, serving as an orbital beacon and observation satellite without being capable of leaving orbit.

Humble Beginnings

As could be expected, even being well-equipped, the pioneers´ life was a harsh one.
1-1 De nombreux problèmes techniques se posent quand à l'exploitation du matériel sophistiqué de colonisation.

1-2 Les solutions locales, très rustiques, s'avèrent être les plus productives malgré un cruel manque de main d'oeuvre.

1-3 Pour palier à ce problème, les colons décident d'utiliser une partie des Sarcophages afin d'incuber une population humaine "accélérée".

1-4 L'incubation dure 14 mois pendant lesquels s'effectue également une instruction intra matricielle.

1-5 A l'issue de ces 14 mois, les nouveaux nés présentent un état de développement physique comparable à celui d'un enfant "normal" de 3 ans.

1-6 Grace à l'instruction intra-matricielle ils marchent en quelques jours et peuvent utiliser un langage verbal sommaire au bout de quelques semaines.
Une formation générale leur permet de s'integrer dans la vie de la communauté.

1-7 Deux ans aprés leur sortie des Sarcophages, ils ont une capacité de travail équivalente à celle d'un enfant d'environ  10 ans.

1-8 Lorsqu'ils atteignent l'âge de cinq ans, par la pratique et un complément de formation plus spécialisée, ils peuvent effectuer un travail d'ouvrier.
 1-1Numerous problems arose as the high-tech equipment failed.

1-2 Local, rustic solutions proved more effective, being hampered by a severe shortage of skilled workforce.

1-3 To amend the situation, the first colonists decided to use part of the life-support sarcophagi to create an “accelerated” human population.

1-4 Humans were “incubated” in the sarcophagi for a period of 14 months, being subjected to various procedures to enhance their intellectual and physical growth rate.

 1-5 Upon release from the sarcophagi, 14-month-old children displayed the properties of “normal” 3-year olds.

1-6 Thanks to this method, the children were able to learn basic language during the next week, after which they were inducted into the general education system.

1-7 Two years after release from the vats, children displayed cognitive and physical skills of a ten-year old.


1-8 At age five, due to the rigorous biological and psychological programme, they proved able to become members of the colonial community.
SOCIÉTÉ: Au bout de quelques décennies, la population accélérée (bien qu'incubée) et sa descendance (née naturellement), ne présentent aucune tare et forment la plèbe, la classe laborieuse.
Les descendants des premiers hibernautes forment une noblesse de fait, les "Fils du Miracle". Ils se réservent l'usage des Archives.

BIOLOGIE: Au cours de cette première période les Sarcophages s'étalonnent aux spécificitées de la biochimie Alterrienne.
Il s'agit de pouvoir soigner les hibernautes et de générer certaines modifications pour améliorer les générations Alterriennes.
Bien qu'Alterra soit vivable en l'état, de nombreuses maladies ou problémes adaptatifs sont ainsi éliminés.
 Society
After several decades, the (incubated) accelerated population and their “natural” offspring proved free of psychological and physical defects and formed “the plebes”, a working class. The descendants of the original crew constituted a “nobility” or ruling caste, called the “Sons of the Miracle”. They made sure that the original archives and technological know-how remained under their control.

Bioscience
During the course of the first period of incubation, the sarcophagi were gradually modified to create future generations of settlers which were more adapted to the requirements of life on Alterra, as well as guaranteeing the well-being of the “Hibernauts”. Although the planet proved habitable and welcoming, numerous contagious germs and other adaptive problems had to be dealt with – effectively by creating a population immune to them.
La Fin du 1er siècle
Les besoins de la population concernent surtout l'habitat, les infrastructures collectives, les biens ménagers d'usage courant.De petits laboratoires ateliers très polyvalents produisent en quantité limitée des matériaux qui sont ensuite travaillés par des artisans à la demande.

La mécanisation n'est pas encore très généralisée.
Un tracteur est utilisé en commun par un village, les motos par les médecins pour leur tournée...
 Life at the end of the First Century
Since the overall population numbers were low, the needs of the community could be addressed by artisans, working on materials provided by small production facilities. The required infrastructure imposed no great demands upon the means of the settlers.

Mechanisation was not prevalent; usually, a village shared a tractor and other machinery for agricultural work; individual vehicles were mainly used for specialists, such as medical personnel touring the hamlets.

THE SECOND CENTURY

2-1 LA CENTIEME ANNEE voit l'officialisation des Maisons des Fils, qui sont au nombre de neuf (Lemure, Oleg, Itche, Fresa, Siler, Onlag, Darnel, Adesh, et Ur.)
Les Maisons sont dirigées par un descendant direct des hibernautes.
Une Province est attribuée à chacune d'elle.

2-2 Des lignées dominantes se créent.
Les autres descendants occupent des fonctions d'administrateurs territoriaux, ou des fonctions particuliéres telles que Hiérarques des Universités ou Gardiens des Sarcophages.

2-3 Les frontières des Provinces sont clairement définies, ainsi que celle des Territoires Sacrés.
Les frontières extérieures de l'ensemble des Provinces sont la limite des Territoires Sacrés. Il n'y a pas d'espaces non attribués en plus.
Un cadastre préventif (le territoire n'est pas entiérement occupé) complet du Premier Pays est établis.

2-4 La stimulation causée par la concurrence entre les provinces favorise la disponibilité de nouveau produits.

2-5 On favorise l'augmentation de la population.
La quantité de population est estimée inferieur à ca que peut acceuillir le Premier Pays.

2-6 Jusqu'a present, les véhicules automobiles étaient rares.
Motos et tracteurs sont maintenant fabriqués en quantité.

2-7 De l'hydronium est fabriqué localement, ce qui permet le développement de moteurs trés puissants.

2-8 Les Synthétiseurs des Origines sont indispensables pour la synthèse des reservoirs nanotech d'hydronium.

2-9 Ces moteurs équipent une nouvelle génération de machines beaucoup plus performantes, comme par exemple des véhicules volants.

2-10 Vers l'an 120, il est clair que la population va continuer d'augmenter
et que les besoins en energie vont suivre.


 2-1 In Year 100 of the Alterran colonisation effort, the colonial system was formalised. Nine “Noble Houses of the Sons” were created, each being led by a direct descendant of the Hibernauts. The settled areas were divided into nine provinces, each province being governed by one of the Noble Houses, their names being Lemure, Oleg, Itche, Fresa, Siler, Onlag, Darnel, Adesh and Ur.

2-2 Dominant bloodlines became prevalent. Other descendants took up intermediate administrative territorial functions or became “Hierarchs of the Universities” or “Guardians of the Sarcophagi”.

2-3 The borders of the provinces were defined, as well as the “Sacred Territories” – effectively all land beyond the borders of “Primeland”. Thereafter, there were no undistributed lands, although not all of Primeland was actually occupied; a complete cadastre was created to control land allocation.

2-4 Competition between the provinces favoured trade and the creation of new products.

2-5 While the Houses fostered an increase in population, Primeland was still vastly underpopulated – large tracts of land remained unsettled.

2-6 Still, larger vehicles were uncommon. Agricultural machines as well as small motorcycles were manufactured in quantity, however.

2-7 Hydronium fuel cells could now be manufactured locally

2-8 But the Synthetisors from the origin are still needed to produce the nanotech hydronium tanks.

2-9 and provided a powerful source of energy for a new generation of high-performance vehicles, aircraft in particular.

2-10 Since the population continued to grow, by AY120, the need for more energy became pressing.
EXPLORATIONS, à partir de  l'an 140:
Des tentatives de franchissement du massif sont effectuées. Elles se soldent par des échecs relatifs.
Des voyages d'exploration sont entrepris dans les territoires autres que le Premier Pays.
On met au point et on construit la Chenille qui va permettre la construction de la base Alpha et l'exploration profonde de la Pangée

CONSTRUCTION DE LA BASE ALPHA, débutée en l'an 150.
La base sert à la fabrication de l'hydronium à partir de l'énergie géothermique.
l'hydronium sert ensuite à remplir les reservoirs-barils.

APPARITION DES PREMIERS EMIGRANTS.
Afin de se soustraire à l'autorité des Fils, certains plébéiens choisissent
de traverser les montagnes et de s'établir de l'autre coté, dans les Bois.
Le voyage est extrêmement périlleux.
Lorsque ce phénoméne devient sensible, les Fils décident la fermeture des frontières, afin de stopper l'émigration. 		The Age of Exploration
From Year 140, first attempts at crossing the central mountain range failed. Exploration missions were dispatched to regions other than the Primeland. The “Caterpillar” is created, a transport vehicle which allowed for the construction of Alpha Base and the further exploration of the pangaean continent.

From Year 150, Alpha Base was constructed in the mountains to serve as a geothermic power plant, fuel production facility and base for exploration.
The First Emigrants

First emigrants
No longer wishing to subject themselves to the authority of the Sons, a number of plebeians chose to cross the mountains in order to find a new home in the heavily wooded lands beyond. Although dangerous, more and more plebeians succeeded, prompting the Sons to close the borders in order to nip the emigration movement in the bud.

3-1 Au début du 3ème siècle, les Citées, capitales des Provinces, se sont développées et deviennent fortement concurrentes. Les Maisons ont de nombreux désaccords, et une période de guerre froide s'installe entre certaines d'entre elles.

3-2 La politique sociale de réservation des connaissances à une quantité limité de la population sélectionnée sur des critéres de filiation familiale a porté ses fruits empoisonnés:

3-3 Les ressources humaines n'ont pas été suffisamment exploitée et la société présente des caractères regressifs: la technologie des Origines  n'a pas fait l'objets d'études suffisantes à son application et à son dévellopement, mais a été monopoliséee à des fins de pouvoir.

3-4 Les Sarcophages se sont dégradés; personne ne sait les réparer et encore moins en fabriquer de nouveaux. Ils fonctionnent sporadiquement.

3-5 Il en est de même pour les synthétiseurs.
En général on arrive à utiliser certaines de leur fonctions simple, pour la fabrication de nano-pièces, ou un peu plus difficile, comme la synthèse de reservoirs-barils.

3-6 Plus que jamais, les Archives sont des enjeux de pouvoir, détenus par les Universités, qui furent creées pour les sauvegarder et les exploiter.

3-6 Certaines Archives sont détruites volontairement afin d'affaiblir des adversaires.
Des pans entiers de la connaissance sont perdus.		 3-1 The opening years of the third century saw the Cities, capitals of the nine provinces, as fully-fledged communities, fiercely competitive in economy and political process.  The Noble Houses grew apart over numerous political discords, and a period of cold war followed.

3-2 Social politics mainly boiled down to restricting knowledge and higher education to a select part pf the population, those deemed worthy on accounts of heritage; this, however, caused new problems.

3-3 The abilities of large parts of the population remained unused, and society showed signs of decay; the technological abilities of the original colonists was not studied and used for scientific progress, but rather monopolised to guarantee the rule of the Noble Houses.

3-4 Most alarmingly, the sarcophagi and synthetic production facilities fell into disuse, worked only sporadically or ceased to function altogether – the knowledge how to maintain and construct them having been lost,

3-5 only basic functions such as the production of nanoelements and storage devices remained available.

3-6 The Archives maintained by the Universities became bargaining chips in the Houses´ struggle for power. No longer being systematically used to further the development of the colonies, the ruling caste only accessed them from time to time to find solutions to pressing needs, mostly to maintain their power.
3-7 La population continue d'augmenter, surtout la plébe.

3-8  La classe au pouvoir, dans certaines Provinces, n'est plus capable de
résoudre des problèmes de la vie courante.
Leur autorité est chancellante.

3-9  Les filières d'émigration sont rodées, et de plus en plus d'individus issus de la plèbe choisissent de partir.

3-10  Les autres nations se développent, comme les Bois, qui cherchent à se
procurer des Technologies Primordiales, et favorisent donc l'accueil des migrants, surtout lorsque ces derniers apportent avec eux un précieux fragment d'Archives...ou un reservoir-baril.

3-11 Ainsi, vol et transfert d'Archives et de Technologies Primordiales suivent les flux migratoires.

3-12  Mais le Premier Pays reste de très loin le plus développé et le plus peuplé...

3-13  Les nations émergentes, surtout les Bois, organisent des coups de mains

3-14 Véhicules et machines deviennent très courants. Ils fonctionnent principalement à l'hydronium fabriqué à la base Alpha.

3-15 Des installations industrielles sont fonctionnelles, qui tente de répondre aux besoins de la  population de plusieurs dizaines de millions d'habitants du premier Pays, sans y arriver vraiment.

3-16 Des Drovaks sont fabriqués en grande série. ce sont des androids mécanique de labeur.
Ils assurent les travaux de force et les travaux dangereux.

3-17 Guerre
An 296. Les Fils effectuent une opération miltaire d'envergure pour prendre en tenaille les Bois: conjointement à une offensive dans la Montagne, ils débarquent une armée sur les Plages, au sud des Bois, en passant par le mer..

3-18 Mais la campagne et un echec, et ils doivent se retirer en abandonnant d'énormes quantités de materiel.

3-19 Ce materiel sera adroitement recyclé et amélioré par les Bois, et les Plages deviendront un lieu de rencontre cosmopolite.
 3-7 The overall population, however, continued to grow, the plebes in particular.

3-8 All this combined to erode the power and authority of the ruling class, who were unable to provide solutions to the aforementioned problems.


3-9 Since the emigration routes were, by now, well-established, more and more members of the working class decided to undertake the trek beyond the borders of Primeland.

3-10 As these emigrant nations, such as the woodland state of Sylvania emerged, they desperately sought essential technology, and welcomed any emigrant willing to help build the new Nations, especially those who carried precious data fragments from one of the Archives or other technical items.

3-11 Thus, by theft and transfer, knowledge of vital technologies followed the flow of migrants.

3-12 Still, Primeland remained the most powerful nation on Pangaea.

3-13 Led by Sylvania, the emigrant nations engineered countless raids and coups to gradually change this situation.

3-14 By now, vehicles and heavy machinery had become widespread. The most common energy source was Hydronium, now manufactured in large amounts at Alpha Base.

3-15 Industrial facilities continued to grow in an attempt to meet the demands of the ever-growing population, now numbering tens of millioTechnology during the Third Century
ns in Primeland alone, without actually achieving this task.

3-16 To address the need for manual labour usable under harsh conditions, the first series of “Drovak” robots were developed.

3-17 War
In 296, the Sons embarked upon a large-scale military operation to subjugate Sylvania: a two-pronged offensive from the southern shores of the woodlands and from the central mountain range.

3-18 This offensive, however, failed, forcing the troops involved to withdraw. They left behind vast quantities of war material and supplies,

3-19  which was subsequently put into service and used as a base for research by the Sylvanians. The coastal areas became a cosmopolitan meeting place used for commerce and culture.

- La monopolisation des Archives par une minorité d'individus ne permet pas d'étudier et d'exploiter largement leur contenu.
Les Archives ne sont exploitées que ponctuellement et ne peuvent participer systématiquement à l'évolution de la colonie, qui présente des caractéres régréssifs.

4ème siècle
De l'an 300 à l'an 399

4-1 Alors que pour les Plages débute l'age d'or, Primeland voit sa suprematie s'affaiblir et le risque majeur d'un dérèglement de l'équilibre biologique planétaire s'accroitre.

4-2 Primeland fait l'objet de coups de main visant à s'emparer d'Objet Primordiaux et d'autres biens précieux.
Il s'agit d'une période d'intense guerre froide et d'espionnage acharné.

4-3 INVASION CITADELLES, An 325.
Les savants du Premier Pays constatent les prémices de la catastrophe prévue dès les origines par l'IA, notamment l'apparition de maladies inconnues jusqu'à present.

4-5 En effet, d'après l'IA d"origine terrestre en activité sur Alterra, le dépassement d'une certaine quantité d'éléments d'origine terrestre perturberait la biologie alterrienne et aurait des conséquences catastrophiques, oou au moins imprévisible.

4.6 Unifié par Atyr, Seigneur de la maison d'Onlag, le Premier Pays tente de contrôler les nations émergentes.

4.7 Après avoir renforcé les défenses de la frontière du massif, les Fils traversent par l'ouest la face océanique et accostent à l'extrême est du
continent, où ils débarquent une colossale armada constituée de forteresses-hopital mobiles: les Citadelles.

4-8 Leur objectif est de stériliser toute la population afin d'éviter une prolifération qui rendrait irréversible le déséquilibre biologique provoqué par une présence trop importante d'éléments d'origine terrestre.

4-9 Les Fils offrent des soins médicaux à vie à ceux qui acceptent la stérilisation.
C'est une aubaine, car seul le premier pays dispose de tels moyens.

4-10 Mais bien peu acceptent et rapidement les opérations de stérilisations
doivent êre doublées d'opérations militaires.

4-11Une guerre totale à l'échelle du continent commence.

4-12 Après une campagne de plusieurs longues années, les nations émergentes sont victorieuses, et le Premier Pays perd son statut de super puissance.

4-13 Peu après, le début du cinquième siècle,
LES EXTÉRIEURS se manifestent.

4-14 Issus eux aussi de l'essaimage primordial, ils ont suivi un développement très différent.
Ils ont étudié toutes les Archives et ont ainsi pu développer d'avantage les différentes sciences.		 -
THE FOURTH CENTURY

While the coastal areas of Sylvania experienced a “Golden Age”, Primeland was troubled by its decreasing military and political status as well as the risk of damaging the planets biological balance, due to the ever-increasing populace.

During this period of intense cold war, Primeland was often the target for raids bent on securing technology and knowledge.

4-3 The Citadel Invasion
During the last decades, the scholars of Primeland had noticed the first signs of catastrophic change as predicted by the artificial intelligence of the colony ship, such as unknown and unexpected contagions and ailments.

4-5 Basically, the AI had come to the conclusion that human presence on Alterra, once it exceeded a certain number of inhabitants, would destabilise the Alterran ecosystem, with catastrophic, or at least unpredictable results.

4-6 United by the energetic Atyr, Seigneur of the House of Onlag, Primeland decided to subjugate the nascent emigrant nations once and for all, in order to ensure survival of the human populace as a whole.

4-7 Having constructed a line of defence fortresses along the mountain range, they sent a vast invasion fleet over the turbulent ocean to the far east of the continent, there disembarking a veritable armada of mobile fortress-hospitals, called “The Citadels”.

4-8 Their objective was to sterilise the whole of the population in order to prevent a population explosion which would irreversibly destabilise the ecosystem.

4-9 In return, they offered medical aid to those who accepted the sterilisation plan voluntarily.

4-10 Expectably, the number of volunteers was minuscule; growing resistance led to the operation being accompanied by military operations, finally exploding into continent-wide, total war.
After years and years of campaigning, the nascent nations emerged victorious, and Primeland lost its superpower status.


4-13 THE EXTRAPLANETARIANS
Shortly after, at the beginning of the Fifth Century, contact was made with other humans, visiting from space.

4-14 Although hailing from the same origins, their history had taken a markedly different course, especially since they had continuously used the full opportunities offered by the Archives to advance scientifically and discover new areas of science unheard of on Alterra.
