The X-10 was designed by North American
Aviation to test aerodynamics and guidance systems for the Navaho missile,
a supersonic cruise missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead more
than 5,000 miles. The final design would have used two ramjets to power
the missile up to a speed of Mach 3.25. The X-10 itself was powered by
a pair of afterburning J-40 turbojets that gave it a top speed of Mach
2.1, which it reached on February 29th, 1956.
